Floyd built his own barbecue pit. His famed brisket is known throughout The West.

Some character drawings are just fun. Steven’s illustration of Floyd Hedges showcases how Life Out West is a fun game, full of laughs and conversation, not a stuffy, quiet, 90-minute standoff between adversaries. And while game purists are cringing at the idea of eating barbecue while playing (I’m sure the cards are sleeved), indulge us for a moment as we share our favorite burnt ends about this famed Lawman.
The layers and positioning of Steven’s drawing are brilliant as your eyes constantly move across the image. Drawn in by sauce-soaked ribs, dripping with flavor, my eyes then wander to his apron where I notice a knife and gun poking out as tools of his trade. I then go back to the top where I am captivated by the sideways glace Floyd gives, knowing few can resist the tempting smell and allure of his mouthwatering meat (an Outlaw catching tactic in its own right). I then notice the shadows and highlights, color of his shirt and neckerchief, when I catch the details of grease stains on his apron and rag. His duster then stands out, as it feels like he was working but then threw on his apron to start cooking. And his badge is on his apron!? How often is he out behind the town Jail on his smoker??
Strategically, Floyd is a more defensive choice, who keeps your hand and schemes safe from opponents. Like all good Lawmen, Floyd’s first job is to protect your town from raids. If he is killed however, he still protects the cards from your hand, letting you give the Outlaw one from the draw pile instead. What’s more, he pairs perfectly (like mac and cheese with brisket) when coupled with a Courthouse (replace a dead Lawman from your hand or another player’s Jail), Funeral Parlor (draw a card when a Gunslinger dies) or Spearhead Armory (attack the Outlaw after your Lawman dies). Mmmm, that’s good!
A true protector and full of charm, we think you will love Floyd Hedges in your next game of Life Out West!
