Gunslinger: Dexter Hanower

Raiding towns only when necessary, Dexter prefers quiet nights by the warm glow of a campfire.

How can you not love someone with a smile like that!? But wait, Dexter is an Outlaw, so I am supposed to hate him, right? Hey, it’s a free country and you can do what you want. As for me and my house, we love Dexter!

For this illustration, from the moment Steven shared a sketch, I couldn’t look at that goofy smile and not laugh. It’s like Dexter has a secret (we’ll get into his ability in a minute) and he just can’t wait to tell you. His eyes add light and mischievousness to his otherwise unassuming outfit. Highlighted by his red-checker neckerchief, there is so much texture in his clothing that makes it look real. And the more I zoom in, the more I see the shading and highlights add a fullness to the illustration, making it look like an illustrative rendition of an actual photograph.

So, other than a good laugh when you play Dexter, he is a wonderful choice whenever you want a leg up on your opponents. Where most Outlaws stop after taking one card, Dexter can draw a card from any pile for every Cattle card on your opponent’s Homestead. And since all Buildings require at least one Cattle Resource, you should be nearly guaranteed an additional card draw in your Gunslinger Phase. This ability is compounded when playing a 7 Resource game of Life Out West and you have an opponent working on a Cattle heavy Building like a Feed Store (3 Cattle), Train Station (4), or the First National Bank (5)!

The next time you are playing and have Dexter, skip the easy raids with no Lawman and always choose a Shootout. You could end up drawing as many as five extra cards! Soon you too will have a goofy grin, just like Dexter.

Card: Outlaw

Ability: After a successful Shootout he may draw one card for every Cattle Card on the Lawman’s Homestead.
