Gunslinger: Oswald Garrity

A coward, though not without skill, Oswald

betters his odds by barricading himself in the vault

Every time I look at Oswald, I just laugh.

For some reason, Steven’s illustration reminds me of an Owen Wilson movie. He has this goofy, clueless look on his face, is a bit disheveled, and there is an unexplained arrow randomly through his hat. I can easily imagine his nervous energy as he anxiously peeps out of the Jail window while an Outlaw repeatedly catcalls him for a Shootout. As Oswald looks through the curtains, he sees the legs of Townsfolk scurrying by as they mutter, “now where is that Sheriff of ours?” In the back, we glimpse Oswald’s less than enthusiastic deputy that asks with a heavy sigh, “barricade in the vault again?”

I’m not going to lie; there are A LOT of Shootouts in Life Out West! So, at first glance Oswald seems like an odd Lawman but don’t let his appearance fool you. While there is always a great thrill in attacking another Town, being the defender can be nerve racking. Especially if you really need the cards in your hand. And if you are playing a 4-player game, there is a good chance you will lose some cards by your next turn. So, why not be strategic and play it safe? After all, it’s better to be alive and finish your Building Project, than dead and one Cattle Card short.

Card: Lawman

Ability: Not known for his bravery, Oswald may flee before a Shootout. If he flees, every Outlaw in an opposing town gets to draw 1 card. Oswald cannot flee if you have the Bank.
